And Be Thankful

November 22, 2011

Across North America, families will sit down to share in a feast. They will give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon them this year, and in years past. For some, it will be an elaborate five-course meal, complete with linen dinner napkins and three dinner forks.

For others, it will be a simple meal, a simple prayer, a time of reflection. And even still, while so many will enjoy family on this day, some will be alone, enjoying a meal in the quietness of home or hotel, with a marathon of movies, facebook, twitter, the internet and football games on television to pass the day.

No matter what your family, your meal, or your companionship: give thanks…on purpose.

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34

As co-mingling family, differing opinions, lifestyles, perspectives, and definitely, spiritual beliefs can be stressful, take a moment today to stop, pray, and give thanks for the family you have, the meal you partake in, the life you’ve been given.

As Christians, we give thanks regularly, but it is always nice when the world pauses for a moment to say a prayer, or unite around a good common goal. I’m sure, for some, tensions will take flight, well planned preparations will go wrong, even some family members that we love may not attend, give thanks…anyway.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

Give thanks…on purpose.

I am so thankful for the multitude of blessings God has given to me.  I am thankful for the challenges, though they don’t feel good. They make me grow.

Our family is like everyone else’s. We choose our battles when it comes to large family gatherings. In all things, we are ambassadors of Christ. So, it is important, this Thanksgiving, whether spent with a multitude of family members or only a few, to shine His light brightly.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” Matthew 5:13

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

Yes, let others praise God because of you. Shine. Let your conversations be seasoned with salt.

And Be Thankful…on purpose.

Have a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving Day!
